SARDA’s History
In 1973, after a visit to the RDA Diamond Centre in England, Belinda Sampson, the mother of a cerebral palsied son, Andrew, returned to Cape Town eager to start a similar venture in South Africa.
SARDA is a registered fund-raising organisation with teaching branches in major centres throughout the country. SARDA is an Associate Member of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) in the United Kingdom, and is affiliated to the Riding for the Disabled International (RDI) organisation.
Due to the expenses involved for parents of children with disabilities, and wishing to make riding accessible to anyone, SARDA’s national constitution states that riding is provided free of charge.
SARDA Durban is a registered, well established Non-Profit organisation

All horse riding classes are offered at no cost to local schools such as Brown’s School Pre-Primary, Westpark School, Khethiwe NPO Project, Brown’s School Autistic Unit, Ethembeni School and Open Air School who transport the children on a weekly basis for lessons. Outings and special occasions can be arranged with consideration to fundraising to cover extra costs.
All fundraising is used for the care, feeding and stabling of our horses, for saddles and equipment for the “Therapy in Motion” horse riding lessons provided free for children with special needs.
Our SARDA Durban Volunteers
Our volunteers are why we can provide “Therapy in Motion” lessons free to those that need it most, especially children with special needs. We are reliant on volunteers, none of which receive any monetary payment for time and service, and who rely solely on the pleasure and enjoyment derived from helping children with special needs.
All the volunteers attend special training courses throughout the year, however it’s their love, laughter and passion for the children and horses, that makes what they do so special.
We need Volunteers as horse leads or side walkers, admin, marketing, overseeing the gardens, helping at events.
